Three modes

Vomit Draft opens by asking what type of writing you want. Screen is the standard screenwriting format described below. Theatre is standard stage play format: centered character names, full-width dialogue, italic stage directions, and ACT / SCENE headings. General is an unformatted pad for freewriting, prose and journaling, where Enter simply starts a new paragraph. Vomit Mode works in all three. Start fresh, or switch modes, any time with New.

Writing a script

Click the page and type. Enter carries you to the next logical element: a scene heading flows into action, a character into dialogue. Press Enter on an empty action line to get a character cue; on an empty dialogue line to return to action.

The app formats as you go: in Screen mode, lines starting with INT. or EXT. become scene headings and CUT TO: becomes a transition. In Theatre mode, lines starting with ACT or SCENE become headings instead. In both, a short UPPERCASE name followed by Enter becomes a character cue.

Elements

Select text and press Ctrl/Cmd B, I or U (or use the B I U buttons) for bold, italics and underline. Emphasis carries into PDF, print and Final Draft exports; the plain-text export strips it.

On a character line, every name already used in the script appears in a small list, most-used first. Keep typing to narrow it, then ↑ ↓ to choose and Enter to take the name and drop into dialogue (or Tab to take it and stay put). Esc dismisses it.

For overlapping speech, put the caret in the second of two consecutive speeches and press Ctrl/Cmd D (or Element menu > Dual dialogue). The two speeches print side by side as columns on the page.

Tab / Shift+Tab cycles the current line through the eight element types. Cmd/Ctrl 1–8 jumps straight to one: scene heading, action, character, dialogue, parenthetical, transition, shot, general text. The selector in the toolbar always shows the current type.

Selecting & deleting

Drag across lines to select whole blocks, or press Cmd/Ctrl A twice to select the entire script. Then Backspace deletes the chunk, typing or pasting replaces it, and Cmd/Ctrl 1–8 retypes every selected line at once. Esc dismisses. One Cmd/Ctrl Z undoes any of it.

Vomit Mode

Press the pill, pick a duration, and write. Everything already written fades and locks. No edits behind you, no undo, no going back. Just forward, like a typewriter. Reloading the page won't stop the clock. When time runs out, everything unlocks and the draft is yours to shape.

Super (armed from the same menu before you start) goes further: rather than locking each line as you leave it, every word sets ten seconds after you write it, mid-sentence and all. You can always keep typing forward, but the sentence behind you hardens as you go. Reach for it and the line flickers to say no.

Pages

The status bar shows which page you are on and how many there are, and a hairline marks where each new page begins as you write. Printed pages are numbered in the top right corner in the standard way, with the first page left unnumbered; turn that off under Export > Page numbers.

Saving & exporting

Your work autosaves in this browser as you type and is recovered when you return. Save and Open move scripts as .json files, and Open also reads Final Draft (.fdx) scripts directly. Pasting Fountain-formatted text into the page works too. Export offers Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain (.fountain), plain text, a printable HTML file, or print-to-PDF, with properly margined pages containing nothing but your words. In Screen and Theatre modes, Export > Title page sets up a standard title page that prints as page one.

Navigation

The left sidebar lists every scene. Click one to jump to it. The status bar tracks scenes, an estimated page count, and autosave.
